Editorial Review for Catalan Food & Wine – by Joshua Hinsdale

The Scene
The duo behind Ibiza carry over creative menu pairings and accessible wines to Catalan. Dark cherry woods and stained cement enliven the mod dining room while hand-painted glass designs and chandeliers hang from the ceiling, adding a touch of whimsy. An occasional roaring flash of flames draws attention to the bustling open kitchen along the back wall. A brick wall and ceiling, in-set with hundreds of wine bottles creates a cozy and romantic alcove on the side farthest from the entrance.

The Food
With a menu inspired by Spain's Catalonia region, expect Chef Chris Shepherd to provide Spanish-based cuisine with a modern touch, in both small and large plates. Top choices include crisp pork belly with cane syrup, foie gras bonbons and braised lamb stuffed with peppers. Soups (available in shots), salads, inventive seafood entrees and pressed sandwiches round out the menu. For dessert, try the peanut butter and chocolate crisps served with vanilla ice cream.

User Reviews for Catalan Food & Wine

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

I went to Catalan expecting a good restaurant, but when I left, I had just experienced a great restaurant. This is now one of my very favorites. I had the chef's tasting, which is a seven-course meal all chosen and prepared by the chef. Each plate was well-presented, outstandingly declicious and kept us wanting more. The service was also nice. We had a very fun waiter. This was hands down one of the best meals I've had in Houston.

Pros: THE FOOD!!!

Cons: none

3 Star Rating: Average

Service was good but food was just ok. It was good just not great! Portions were pretty small and the menu could have used a bit more diversity for my taste.

Pros: Service was good. Waiters wore jeans but price and ambience suggest an upscale experience.

Cons: small portions, pricey wine list, flavors a bit bland.
