Editorial Review for Topwater Grill – by Joshua Hinsdale
In Short
Top Water Grill is the antidote to the area's many corporate-owned seafood restaurants that seem to all have similar menus and elevated prices. After a circuitous journey through the San Leon coastal plains, the road ends and the good times begin. The unassuming restaurant is home to some of the best-tasting seafood anywhere on the Gulf Coast. The shrimp are plump, the fish is fresh and even the burgers are delicious. The fish tacos are legendary.

Insider Tips
Where to SitFor the full Top Water experience, choose a table on the covered porch overlooking the boat docks. The floor is concrete and the tables are plastic, but the view is inspiring and the breeze divine.

We have eaten here on several occasions. The service has always been very good. the only real complaint I have is that the food is not seasoned very much. I do love the location on the water and have sat inside, on the patio and on the dock. They are kinda pricey for the food you get so we generally do not go very often. Maybe 3 times a year.
Pros: parking, location
Cons: price

Use MapQuest! It's an unassuming looking wooden building, with no signage viewable from the street. We were given our choice of tables...inside under the a/c, on the open air covered patio, or on the open deck, next to the water. We chose the deck and had no unfortunate seagull incidents. The deck was in shade and the breeze off the bay was wonderful. Boats can pull right up to the deck and tie up. We were seated within moments of our arrival and as soon as we were seated there was someone to take our drink orders. I chose a draft beer which was good and cold and my husband had iced tea which was fresh brewed and served with plenty of ice. When our drinks were served we were ready to order. I had the Malibu Coconut Shrimp which was served with jalapeno hushpuppies, french fries and shrimp cole slaw. My husband chose the seafood plate with shrimp and fried fish that came with the same side orders as mine. We were served in a timely manner and the food was really good. The shrimp was fresh and well flavored, crisp and hot and were accompanied with a mango habanero sauce. The sauce was the perfect combination of sweet mango and pepper. The jalapeno hushpuppies were excellent., crisp on the outside and a with a subtle jalapeno flavor . The shrimp cole slaw was cold and the cabbage crisp and wonderfully flavored. The french fries had a slightly spicy coating and were fried perfectly, not too greasy and crisp to bite into. The fried fish was crisp and flavorful. Our waiter was properly attentive. The total was more than we spend at our favorite Mexican restaurant but the ambience, people watching opportunities, good service and large portions of good food made it well worth what we paid. We were there on a Sunday evening and most of the patio and deck tables were occupied. with mostly locals which is usually a good indicator that a restaurant is consistent in service and quality of food. We will be back to see if that holds true in this case.
Pros: Easy to park, good food and service
