Editorial Review for Treebeards – by Citysearch Editors
In Short
Smart downtowners know about the soulful Southern fare at this wonderfully reliable Louisiana-style cafeteria. Discerning diners and tough critics alike agree this is the place for jambalaya, buttery shrimp etouffee, red beans and rice with link sausage, and homemade jalapeno cornbread. Housed in the second oldest building in Houston, the Baker-Travis Building, the decor is sparse, but still warm and friendly. Treebeards offers unfussy service and reasonable prices. When the weather is willing, dine outside on the balcony.

I daydream about the wonderful jambalaya I used to order at lunch when I worked downtown in the 80's. Go for "The Full Boat" as the large order of J was called. Be generous with the napkins as I ruined more than one shirt and tie with the spicy sauce! Too bad they don't have suburban locations. One in Market Street in The Woodlands would go over very well!
Pros: ambience, atmosphere, great chow
Cons: parking, good place to power walk to the restaurant from downtown offices

I have been eating at Treebeards since I moved to Houston in the early 80's. For the money I would say it's my favorite restaurant in Houston. Even though I live 20 miles from downtown I still make the trip once a week for the red beans and rice, served "all the way".
Pros: located in the scenic, historical area of Houston.
Cons: None
